Brisbane’s long-running sustainability festival, the Green Heart Fair, will return with a new name and fresh identity in 2025 as the Sustainable BNE Festival, reflecting its growing mission to inspire practical, community-led environmental action.
To be held on Sunday, May 25, at Roma Street Parklands, the rebranded event will feature expert-led workshops, live music, market stalls, food trucks, yoga, thrift shops, and hands-on activities such as Kokedama ball-making and silent discos.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the event’s transformation marks an exciting chapter in Brisbane’s journey to becoming a global leader in sustainable living. “This is a much-loved community event that teaches residents how to live more affordably and sustainably to protect our incredible lifestyle,” he said. “Brisbane is only the second city in the world to have achieved the UN’s highest level of recognition for sustainability. The Sustainable BNE Festival is a great way to help residents understand how they can make a difference and help Brisbane remain Australia’s most sustainable city.”
The festival, which began as a suburban fair with just 500 attendees, now draws over 20,000 people each year and is delivered in partnership with the Brisbane Sustainability Agency. Agency CEO Tracy Melenewycz said the festival plays a key role in helping residents embrace everyday sustainability.
“The Sustainable BNE Festival is where our ambition for sustainability truly shines, bringing together leading experts to inspire change and create an even better Brisbane,” she said. “People sometimes get overwhelmed by the idea of sustainability… but everyone can do their bit by adopting small, practical changes, and the festival does a fantastic job of showing us how to do that.”
Supported by partners including Bupa, Channel 7, Optus, Urban Utilities, Hire Republic, and Brandition, the event will remain free and open to all, reinforcing its inclusive and educational purpose.
