Melbourne has been issued with a severe thunderstorm warning as heavy clouds move across Victoria, following the state’s hottest day since March.
Temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius were recorded at Avalon on Monday, while the Bureau of Meteorology’s Olympic Park observation station showed the mercury hit 35C.
BOM forecaster Rod Dickson said the day did not get as hot as originally forecast.
“There have been parts of the metropolitan area that have warmed up, but … we’ve fallen short by a couple of degrees thanks to the cloud cover earlier today,” he said.
The storm weather is coming in from the west, affecting Caulfield, Craigieburn, Frankston, Glen Waverley, Greensborough, Ringwood and Rosebud.
“Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely,” the bureau said.
The thunderstorm brought a cool change to the city, with the temperature dropping from 35C at 5:30pm to 23C at 6:40pm.
The cool weather is forecast to continue for the next seven days.
A severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central, Mallee, Northern Country, North Central, Wimmera and parts of the South West forecast districts of the state.
