New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Tributes poured in from the Indian cricket community after one of India’s veteran actors, Dharmendra, passed away on Monday at the age of 89.

Dharmendra, who was earlier admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai, was discharged on November 12 after showing signs of recovery. However, the actor departed for the heavenly abode just a few days after returning home from the hospital.

India’s World Cup-winning all-rounder Deepti Sharma, sharing a picture of the late actor on her Instagram story, wrote, “Dharmendra Ji was not just a film star but a true hero, who made us all believe that you can dream and achieve with love in your heart! We all will miss him! Om Shanti.”

While former India batter Virender Sehwag wrote on X, “Dharmendra ji was not just an actor, he was an era. A star in simplicity, a He-Man in strength, and gold at heart. His films, his style, and his warmth will be remembered for generations. A great artist, may God grant peace to his soul. Om Shanti.”

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh penned a heartfelt note on X, saying, “Heartfelt tribute to Dharmendra Ji — a timeless icon whose grace, strength, and unparalleled charm have left an everlasting mark on Indian cinema. From his powerful performances to his warmth both on and off screen, he touched countless hearts and inspired generations. His films, his smile, and his spirit will forever remain etched in our memories. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.”

“The end of an era. Bollywood’s beloved He-Man, Dharmendra Ji, is no more. His timeless films, warmth, and unforgettable legacy will continue to live in our hearts for generations. From a small village in Punjab to the heart of Indian cinema, his journey will forever inspire. Heartfelt tribute to the legend. Om Shanti,” wrote former cricketer Kedar Jadhav.

“You stood tall, not just in stature, but in spirit. Dharmendra ji, thank you for showing us strength can be kind. Om Shanti,” former India opener Shikhar Dhawan penned.

Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings, sharing a picture of the veteran actor on X, wrote, “Parde te amar, te saade dilan vich vi hamesha lai amar!” in Punjabi, which translates to “Immortal on the screen, and forever immortal in our hearts too!”

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) shared a picture of Dharmendra and captioned it, “The He-Man of Bollywood,” while the franchise put up another picture of the legendary actor with the team’s co-owners, Bollywood celebrities Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, and wrote, “Rest in Peace, Dharmendra ji.”

“Farewell to a legend. Sending our condolences to Dharam Ji’s family, friends and fans across the world,” said Delhi Capitals in their X post.

Born in 1935 in Punjab, Dharmendra began his career in the early 1960s after being discovered through a talent hunt competition. He was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.

He is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur; their four children, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Ajeta Deol, Vijayta Deol; his second wife, Hema Malini; and their two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
