Historic honour for Nalini Joshi as NSW Scientist of the Year 2025

Celebrated Indian-origin mathematician Nalini Joshi AO has been awarded the title of 2025 New South Wales Scientist of the Year, becoming the first mathematician to receive the state’s top science distinction. The announcement was made at the NSW Premier’s Prizes for Science & Engineering ceremony held at Government House.

A professor of applied mathematics at the University of Sydney, Joshi was recognised for her outstanding and influential contributions to the mathematical sciences. Her research has played a key role in advancing understanding of complex natural and physical systems, including the behaviour of light in optical fibres and the formation of deep-sea rogue waves—areas with significant implications for climate science, communications, and modern technology.

The 2025 recognition is being seen as a landmark moment, highlighting the growing importance of mathematics in addressing real-world scientific and technological challenges. Joshi’s achievement has also attracted international attention, with the Australian High Commission in India acknowledging her success and celebrating the global impact of an Indian-origin academic.

Her work also extends into emerging domains such as quantum technology and cybersecurity. Joshi has drawn attention to the challenges posed by future quantum computing capabilities, particularly their potential impact on current digital security systems, and her research contributes essential mathematical foundations to address these concerns.

Beyond her research achievements, Joshi is widely respected for her leadership in promoting gender equity in science. She is a co-founder of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) program, which aims to improve the participation and retention of women in STEM disciplines.

Speaking at the ceremony, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns praised Joshi’s work for helping to unravel complex scientific questions while inspiring the next generation of scientists and researchers.
