Patna, Jan 20 (IANS) The absence of concrete action in the suspicious death of a NEET aspirant at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna has raised serious questions over the functioning of the state government and the police.
Even several days after the incident, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the case has failed to arrive at any definitive conclusion, fuelling criticism and political controversy.
The issue has triggered sharp political reactions, with Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, repeatedly questioning the Bihar government and the Patna Police over their handling of the case.
In a fresh post on X, Rohini Acharya alleged that both the government and the SIT have maintained complete silence on crucial aspects of the investigation, while the state’s Home Minister has been offering what she described as routine and “cliched” responses.
Sharing her concerns, Rohini wrote, “Directionless investigation… an attempt to mislead!! A common perception is taking hold among the people of Bihar that if anyone still has hope from the police investigation in the Shambhu Girls’ Hostel incident, they are living in a delusion.”
She further claimed that nearly two weeks have passed since the incident and that the available evidence and post-mortem report have already clarified many aspects of the case.
“Yet, under the guise of investigation, the police are presenting a new misleading and confusing theory every day,” she alleged.
Rohini also questioned the lack of action against those she said were responsible, naming the hostel operators, Sahaj Surgery Nursing Home, Prabhat Memorial Hospital, Dr Satish of Prabhat Hospital, a woman police officer of Chitragupta Nagar police station, and the Senior Superintendent of Police of Patna.
She alleged that the SIT has remained silent on why the main accused has not yet been arrested.
She further criticised the state leadership, stating that the Chief Minister has remained silent on the matter, while the Home Minister appears to be merely responding formally without addressing key concerns.
In her concluding remarks, Rohini Acharya alleged that the Bihar government and the police were deliberately delaying and diverting the investigation.
“It appears that the investigation is being prolonged to let the matter die down, in an attempt to protect the accused and culprits under some major pressure,” she claimed.
The incident took place on January 6, when a girl preparing for the NEET-UG examination was found unconscious in her room at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Chitraguptnagar, Patna.
She was subsequently admitted to a private hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on January 11.
A post-mortem examination conducted at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) stated that the possibility of sexual assault could not be ruled out, according to the doctors who carried out the autopsy.
