Shillong, Jan 21 (IANS) Meghalaya on Tuesday marked its 54th Statehood Day with the official celebrations being held for the first time at Baghmara in South Garo Hills district, a move seen as a strong statement of the government’s commitment to balanced and inclusive development across the State.
The celebrations were held in honour of the founding father of Meghalaya, late Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the State’s first Chief Minister, whose home district hosted the event.
The occasion was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, among other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, CM Sangma said the creation of Meghalaya was the result of divine blessings, collective prayers and the unwavering resolve of the people. He paid tribute to the leaders who spearheaded the Statehood movement through non-violent and persistent struggle, recalling how people from different tribes and communities came together with a shared dream and common purpose.
Expressing concern over growing divisions in contemporary times, particularly on social media, the Chief Minister said negativity and hatred undermine the values on which Meghalaya was founded. He urged citizens to remember the sacrifices and ideals of the State’s forefathers and work towards unity and mutual respect. The Chief Minister informed that he had received a personal letter from the Prime Minister conveying warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Meghalaya on Meghalaya Day. He said the Prime Minister fondly recalled the late P.A. Sangma and acknowledged his immense contribution to the State and the nation.
On development, Sangma said Meghalaya has recorded an average growth rate of around 10 per cent over the last three years, placing it among the fastest-growing States in the country. However, he stressed that growth figures alone do not define success and that real development must be felt in the everyday lives of people.
Referring to the CM-Connect programme, Sangma said mindset plays a crucial role in governance. “If we decide in advance that something cannot be done, then we have already failed,” he remarked, adding that districts must have clear plans, targets and a shared vision to meaningfully contribute to the State’s overall growth.
Highlighting key announcements for the region, the Chief Minister said the second phase of the Baghmara water supply project, amounting to Rs 140 crore, had been cleared, calling it a major boost for South Garo Hills. He also assured that road connectivity issues would be addressed and expressed a strong commitment to upgrading the Baghmara Civil Hospital with better facilities, hygiene, equipment and manpower.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong described the celebration as historic, noting that it was perhaps the first time in his political career that a State-level Statehood Day function was held at Baghmara. Acknowledging that South Garo Hills has long been considered one of the most backward districts, he said the government is making concerted efforts to ensure last-mile development, particularly through improved connectivity and infrastructure.
The programme featured cultural performances, presentation of Meghalaya Day Awards and Governor’s Police Medals, screening of a video titled Rise Meghalaya, and concluded with the National Anthem, reflecting the State’s rich heritage, unity and aspirations for the future.
