Shillong, April 1 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, on Wednesday, urged students to pursue their passion with determination and adapt to a rapidly evolving technological world, while addressing the Meghalaya IT Awards 2026 ceremony in Shillong.

Speaking at the U Soso Tham Auditorium here, Chief Minister Sangma congratulated meritorious students of the 2025 academic year and emphasised that their achievements reflected years of discipline, sacrifice and perseverance.

“What you have achieved today is something every student aspires to, but only a few accomplish,” he said, adding that the occasion was meant to celebrate their hard work and recognise their dedication.

Highlighting the significance of the laptops distributed to awardees, the Chief Minister said the devices symbolise more than material value.

“It represents recognition, encouragement and our belief in your potential,” he noted, urging students to use technology as a tool for growth and innovation.

Chief Minister Sangma also spoke about the rapidly changing global landscape driven by technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence, saying that while disruptions such as layoffs in the IT sector may seem concerning, they also create new opportunities.

He said that Meghalaya is gradually emerging as a hub for technology-driven innovation, citing the IT Park in Shillong, which is attracting companies working in advanced domains.

Sharing a personal anecdote, Chief Minister Sangma said his own entrepreneurial aspirations after studying at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania were challenged by the lack of an enabling ecosystem at the time.

He noted that such experiences have shaped the state government’s current focus on building a supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurship, skill development and innovation in the state.

Encouraging students to contribute to Meghalaya’s growth, the Chief Minister said that while opportunities outside the state remain important, there is immense untapped potential within the region.

He also stressed the importance of humility and perseverance, remarking that “success should never get to your head”, and highlighted the need for the “extra degree” of effort that transforms potential into achievement.

Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui underscored the importance of digital learning and said technology is now integral to everyday life.

He added that the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to empowering students.

A total of 203 students from various state boards were honoured at the event, where laptops were distributed to recognise academic excellence.
