Vijay to campaign in Tirunelveli tomorrow, Tuticorin visit also planned

Tirunelveli, April 7 (IANS) Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to intensify his election campaign in southern Tamil Nadu, with a visit to Tirunelveli district scheduled for April 8, party leaders confirmed on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by TVK General Secretary ‘Bussy’ N. Anand, who said the visit forms part of the party’s broader strategy to strengthen its grassroots connect and mobilise support ahead of the Assembly elections.

According to Anand, Vijay will also travel to Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) during the same tour, where he is expected to meet party cadres and supporters in a more informal setting.

He, however, emphasised that the detailed schedule of the visit, including specific venues and timings, will be released only after obtaining necessary clearances from the police.

“The exact schedule, including locations and timings, will be announced through the TVK’s official website once the required permissions are obtained from the police authorities,” Anand said.

He added that discussions with law enforcement are currently underway to finalise the programme.

Uncertainty also remains over whether Vijay will conduct a roadshow in Tirunelveli.

Anand said a decision on this aspect would depend on the permissions granted and logistical considerations.

“It is not yet clear if a roadshow will be held. We will confirm once approvals are in place,” he said.

While Vijay is expected to spend time with supporters in Tuticorin, Anand clarified that no public address is planned in the coastal district.

“He will meet fans and party workers there, but there will be no formal speech or large public gathering,” he added.

Meanwhile, the party’s previously-announced campaign events in Chennai have been called off, leading to speculation over administrative hurdles.

Vijay was originally scheduled to campaign in Villivakkam and T. Nagar constituencies on April 6 and 7.

Sources within the police, however, indicated that permission had been granted for a limited duration of one hour, contradicting rumours that the request had been denied outright.

The reasons for the cancellation of the Chennai programme remain unclear.

Vijay’s campaign trail has generated considerable attention across Tamil Nadu, with large crowds expected at each of his appearances as TVK seeks to expand its political footprint in the state.
