Heatwave to intensify across interior TN; light showers likely in few regions

Chennai, April 20 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a warning that heat conditions are set to intensify across the interior districts of Tamil Nadu over the next five days, with temperatures expected to rise above normal levels.

According to the latest weather bulletin, maximum temperatures in the interior parts of the state are likely to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages.

The prevailing atmospheric conditions, including the influence of a low-pressure system, are contributing to the rise in temperature, particularly in inland regions where dry heat is expected to dominate.

At the same time, the weather department has forecast the possibility of light rainfall in isolated locations, especially along the Western Ghats and in coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu until April 21.

These showers are attributed to localised weather disturbances linked to the low-pressure system. Further, on April 22 and 23, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to occur at isolated places in districts along the Western Ghats, delta regions, and in Karaikal.

The intermittent rainfall activity may provide temporary relief from the prevailing heat, though it is unlikely to significantly alter the overall temperature trend across the state.

The Meteorological Department has also cautioned residents in coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry about the likelihood of high humidity levels combined with elevated temperatures. This combination could lead to discomfort and heat-related stress, particularly during daytime hours.

In Chennai and its adjoining suburbs, the sky is likely to remain partly cloudy over the coming days.

While no significant rainfall has been forecast for the city, humidity levels are expected to remain high, which may make conditions feel warmer than the recorded temperatures.

Authorities have advised the public to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and being vigilant about symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

The weather pattern comes at a time when the state is witnessing peak summer conditions, and officials are closely monitoring developments to issue timely advisories.
