Srinagar, April 29 (IANS) Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district have destroyed illicit poppy cultivation and registered five FIRs in connection with the cases, officials said on Wednesday.

A statement said that Anantnag Police have intensified the drive against the illicit cultivation of narcotic crops in the district.

Acting on specific information, a police party, along with the concerned Naib Tehsildar, Agriculture Department officials, and the Executive Magistrate, visited village Liver, Srigufwara.

During the operation, poppy cultivation spread over approximately 30 marlas of land belonging to various individuals was detected and destroyed on the spot in the presence of officials.

In this regard, 4 FIRs were registered under the relevant provisions of law at the Police Station Srigufwara, and an investigation has been initiated.

In another action, reliable information was received through the Beat Officer of Nanil regarding illicit poppy cultivation by Gh Nabi Mir, son of Gh Ahmed, resident of Nanil. Acting swiftly, the police party, along with Agriculture Department officials and the Executive Magistrate, inspected the land, where poppy plants were found cultivated over approximately 270 square feet.

The crop was destroyed on the spot. Accordingly, FIR No. 47/2026 U/S 8/18 NDPS Act has been registered at the Police Station Mattan, and an investigation has been initiated.

“Anantnag Police reiterates its firm commitment to eradicate the menace of narcotic drugs and appeals to the public to cooperate by reporting any such illegal activities. Strict legal action shall follow against those found involved in the cultivation or trade of narcotic substances”, the statement said.

The J&K police have been carrying out aggressive operations against drug smugglers and those cultivating narcotic crops like Charas, Poppy, etc. These illegal activities finally destroy the future generations of Kashmiris by making them victims of easily available psychotropic substances.

During the ongoing 100-day-long Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan, the authorities have announced strict punitive action against the drug smugglers and peddlers.

The punitive action involves cancellation of Aadhaar cards, driving licences and passports. In addition, properties created by funds generated through these illegal activities are also attached by the police after obtaining orders from the court.
