Patna, May 1 (IANS) In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, police in Bihar’s Gopalganj district have arrested a man and a woman and seized approximately 95 grams of smack (heroin) from their possession.

The action was carried out during a routine vehicle inspection under the jurisdiction of Manjhagarh police station.

The incident occurred on Thursday night near the Bahorahata bridge, where police were conducting a vehicle-checking operation.

During the operation, a man and a woman riding a black Apache motorcycle grew visibly nervous on spotting the police and attempted to flee.

Acting swiftly, the police team chased and intercepted the duo.

On searching their belongings, officers recovered 135 small packets of smack concealed inside a bag, weighing approximately 95 grams in total.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Harkesh Singh (43), a resident of Karsghat under Mohammadpur police station, and Roshan Tara, a resident of Sareya, Ward No. 02, under Nagar police station. Both are residents of Gopalganj district.

In addition to the narcotics, police also seized a mobile phone and some cash from their possession.

A formal seizure list was prepared at the spot, and the families of the accused were informed following their arrest.

During questioning, the accused failed to provide satisfactory explanations, leading police to suspect their involvement in a larger narcotics trafficking network.

Investigators are now working to identify other individuals connected to the supply chain.

Rajesh Kumar, Sadar SDPO-2, Sidhwalia range, on Friday said that the suspects were apprehended under suspicious circumstances during routine checking.

“The recovery of multiple packets of smack led to their immediate arrest,” Kumar said.

He added that an FIR under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Manjhagarh police station.

Further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the network and bring other accused to justice.
