Bhopal, May 6 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will flag off the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Yatra’ from Rani Kamalapati Railway Station in Bhopal on Thursday, marking a significant cultural and spiritual initiative of the state government, an official said on Wednesday.

The yatra is being organised by the state Culture Department as part of the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv’, an initiative aimed at promoting India’s cultural consciousness and spiritual heritage.

This will be the first such journey from Madhya Pradesh to the historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.

Around 1,100 devotees from different parts of the state will form the first contingent.

The special train will also pick up additional pilgrims from Bhopal and Ujjain railway stations before proceeding towards Somnath, one of the country’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.

The Somnath Temple holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition, as it is considered the first among the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The temple is not only a centre of faith but also a powerful symbol of resilience, having been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries.

Its legacy represents the enduring strength of devotion and the continuity of India’s cultural identity.

During the journey, devotees will participate in religious rituals, offer prayers and attend cultural programmes organised in the temple town.

Officials said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey, allowing participants to fully engage in the spiritual experience.

Director of Culture N.P. Namdev said the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv’ is intended to highlight India’s rich traditions and inspire pride in its heritage.

He added that the initiative seeks to remind people of the country’s long-standing faith and civilisational journey.

Namdev further said that the Somnath Swabhiman Parv-2026 was earlier organised in January at Somnath with participation from several states, reflecting a nationwide effort to celebrate shared cultural roots.

The yatra will conclude on May 11, when the devotees return to Madhya Pradesh.

The government believes the initiative will strengthen spiritual tourism, cultural unity and deeper public engagement with India’s sacred traditions.
