Ahmedabad civic body activates standby pumps, borewells during 10-day Narmada canal repairs

Ahmedabad, May 6 (IANS) The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has activated a series of advanced measures to maintain water supply across the city as repair work on the Narmada main canal is expected to reduce availability for about 10 days, officials said on Wednesday.

The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited has undertaken pre-monsoon repair and maintenance of damage to the canal lining.

In view of the work, water levels in the canal will be regulated as required from May 6 for an estimated 10-day period.

This is expected to reduce the volume of water reaching the Kotarpur Water Works, affecting its capacity to distribute water at normal levels.

“In view of the canal repair works, the water level will be adjusted as required, leading to a reduction in the quantity available at Kotarpur. Advance planning has been carried out to ensure that the impact on the city’s water supply remains minimal,” officials said.

Under normal conditions, the Kotarpur Water Treatment Plant treats around 1,100 million litres per day (MLD) and supplies it to approximately 170 water distribution stations across the west, central, north, east and south zones of Ahmedabad.

During the repair period, a shortfall of around 50 to 60 MLD is anticipated.

“To manage the situation, 100 per cent standby pumps at the raw water pump house have been made operational to draw water instead of relying on the usual gravity-based flow. Additionally, borewells at various water distribution stations will be activated to address an estimated 10 to 15 per cent gap in supply,” officials noted.

Officials said the water supply system is under continuous monitoring to ensure balanced distribution based on available stock.

“Efforts are being made to ensure that citizens face minimal inconvenience during this period,” officials added.

AMC has also appealed to residents to cooperate and use water judiciously. “Citizens are requested to use water carefully so that equitable supply can be maintained across all areas,” officials said.

The repair work forms part of routine pre-monsoon preparedness to address damage to canal infrastructure and ensure its smooth functioning during the monsoon season.
