MP: BJP leaders slam Congress’s ‘Kisan Chakkajam’ protest

Bhopal, May 7 (IANS) The BJP has launched a sharp attack on the Congress party’s ‘Kisan Chakkajam’ agitation, accusing it of misleading farmers and disturbing the state’s atmosphere.

Bharatiya Janata Party Kisan Morcha State President Jaipal Singh Chavda said Congress State President Jitu Patwari is inconveniencing farmers and the public merely to build his own political image.

He reminded Congress of its record when farmers faced bullets and were charged interest rates as high as 18 per cent.

Chavda emphasised that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is personally inspecting wheat procurement centres and interacting with farmers to resolve grievances.

He noted that irrigation expansion has led to a bumper harvest this year, with wheat procurement targets raised from 78 lakh tonnes to nearly 100 lakh tonnes.

He accused Congress of promoting negative politics, which has led to repeated electoral defeats, and urged them to work constructively with the government instead of spreading misinformation.

Highlighting Bharatiya Janata Party’s record, Chavda said the government cleared Rs 2,800 crore in farmers’ loan dues, raised the Minimum Support Price for wheat, and provided bonuses over the Minimum Support Price.

He described the Congress protest as driven by selfish motives, warning that such blockades could disrupt emergency services.

He insisted that the Bharatiya Janata Party government remains committed to increasing farmers’ incomes, reducing input costs, and mitigating agricultural risks, with enhanced output and beneficial schemes serving as proof of success.

The protest drew widespread condemnation from Bharatiya Janata Party leaders across divisions.

State Minister Tulsiram Silawat in Indore, Minister Govind Singh Rajput in Sagar, Member of Parliament Vivek Bunty Sahu in Chhindwara, spokesperson Rajendra Bharti in Ujjain, spokesperson Yashpal Singh Sisodia in Mandsaur, Member of Legislative Assembly Ghanshyam Pironiya in Gwalior, and Member of Legislative Assembly Neeraj Singh Lodhi in Jabalpur all issued strong statements against Congress’s agitation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders collectively asserted that the government values every grain produced by farmers and is committed to safeguarding their interests, while Congress’s agitation serves only narrow political ends.

While in a post on X handle, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Umang Singhar said, “The voice of the farmer is now on the streets…”

He further wrote that a detailed discussion on farmers’ issues was held with former Agriculture Minister and Member of Legislative Assembly from Kasrawad, Sachin Yadav.

He asked why a farmer’s son no longer wishes to pursue farming, why only 10-15 per cent of the targeted wheat was procured during the procurement drive, why farmers are being kept in a state of confusion through repeated extensions of deadlines, and why small farmers are being compelled to sell their produce at distressingly low prices.

“The unvarnished truth, revealing the stark reality that lies between the hollow claims made by the Bharatiya Janata Party government and the ground situation,” he said.

The Congress party will continue to firmly champion the voice of the farmers, from the streets all the way to the legislative assembly, Singhar said.
