Football: Barcelona eye La Liga glory in Clasico against Real Madrid

Madrid, May 7 (IANS) Spanish giant Barcelona could clinch the La Liga title on Sunday when they host arch-rivals Real Madrid in the season’s final Clasico at Camp Nou. Barcelona currently holds an 11-point lead over Real Madrid with only four matches remaining. A draw on Sunday would be enough for Hansi Flick’s side to secure the league title with three games still left to play.

Barcelona will be without young star Lamine Yamal and defender Andreas Christensen due to injuries, but Flick otherwise has most of his squad available. Real Madrid, meanwhile, continues to struggle with injuries. Ferland Mendy has joined Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Arda Guler, Dani Carvajal, and Thibaut Courtois on the sidelines, while Kylian Mbappe remains doubtful with a muscle injury, as reported by Xinhua.

Even though Barcelona are favourites to win the title, Real Madrid will still hope to delay their rivals’ celebrations and finish the season on a positive note.

Elsewhere, the race for European qualification and survival continues across La Liga. Atletico Madrid hosts Celta Vigo on Saturday after Atletico’s Champions League semifinal exit against Arsenal. Atletico are close to securing a top-four finish, while Celta are pushing for a Europa League place and could still challenge for fifth spot.

Real Betis travel to face Real Sociedad, whose form has dropped after winning the Copa del Rey. Mallorca, boosted by last weekend’s win over Girona, will face third-placed Villarreal as they continue their fight to avoid relegation. Villarreal recently confirmed that coach Marcelino Garcia Toral will leave the club at the end of the season.

At the bottom of the table, second-last Levante desperately needs a win against Osasuna to keep their survival hopes alive. Athletic Club, which announced Edin Terzic as next season’s coach earlier this week, will host Valencia.

Meanwhile, Alaves face a crucial clash against Elche in the relegation battle, while Sevilla take on Espanyol in another key match near the bottom of the standings.
