Srinagar, May 8 (IANS) The single-largest narcotics-linked property attachment in the Union Territory, worth Rs 6.5 crore, has been carried out in J&K’s Anantnag district, police said on Friday.

A police statement said in continuation of its sustained and aggressive crackdown against the narcotics network, Anantnag police has initiated attachment/seizure proceedings under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act against Bashir Ahmad Mir, son of Gul Mohammad Mir, and his family members, residents of Doonipora Sangam, after an enquiry conducted under Chapter VA of the NDPS Act revealed that the family had amassed huge movable and immovable assets disproportionate to their known lawful sources of income.

The enquiry further established that these properties were jointly held by the family members and are suspected to have been acquired through proceeds generated from the illicit narcotics trade. During the course of enquiry, the following criminal antecedents of the family surfaced: FIR No. 213/2024 under sections 8/15 & 29 NDPS Act of Police Station Bijbehara involving recovery of 58.90 kg of poppy straw against Mir, FIR No. 191/2020 under section 8/20 NDPS Act of Police Station Bijbehara involving recovery of 500 grams of charas against Mir, and FIR No. 232/2011 under section 8/20 NDPS Act involving recovery of 1.100 Kgs of charas against Gul Mohammad Mir, son of Mohammad Sadiq Mir, and father of the main accused.

The properties identified and attached/seized during the proceedings included a double-storeyed residential house situated at Doonipora, a newly constructed residential house also situated at Doonipora, a commercial building ‘Muskan Restaurant’ situated at Sangam, 211 marlas of land situated at Sangam/Naina area, and a vehicle bearing registration No. JK03H-5758.

The total estimated value of the attached/seized properties is approximately Rs 6.5 crore. This action reflects Anantnag police’s firm resolve to dismantle the financial infrastructure of drug traffickers and to ensure that proceeds generated through the illegal narcotics trade are identified, attached, and brought under the ambit of law.

The campaign against drug abuse and trafficking shall continue with full determination, it asserted.
