CPI(M), Cong demand probe into Tripura BJP youth leader’s death

Agartala, May 11 (IANS) Opposition CPI(M) and the Congress on Monday demanded a high-level impartial inquiry into the mysterious death of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Rahul Kishore Roy in North Tripura district.

Roy’s body was found in the bathroom of his residence in the North Tripura district on May 5, triggering widespread public outrage and political reactions across Tripura.

He was the President of BJP Yuva Morcha Dharmanagar Mandal and also an elected councillor of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council. Police suspect that the 38-year-old youth BJP leader committed suicide.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said that an impartial and high-level investigation is urgently required to ascertain the circumstances leading to the death of the BJYM leader and to ensure punishment for those responsible. “The government should stand beside Roy’s pregnant wife and provide her with moral, economic, and social support,” said Chaudhury, who is also the CPI(M) Tripura state Secretary and a member of the party’s Politburo.

North Tripura District Congress President Digbijoy Chakraborty alleged that Roy had become a victim of an internal feud within the BJP. “He said that after facing atrocities and attacks by a section of ruling party workers, Roy took the extreme step,” the Congress leader claimed while demanding a high-level independent probe into the death.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home Department portfolio, assured a fair investigation into the matter. In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister earlier said: “I would like to assure that the allegations brought forward by his wife will be thoroughly and impartially investigated, and appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.”

“I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Rahul Kishore Roy, Mandal President of Yuva Morcha in Dharmanagar. I pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members,” CM Saha added in his social media statement.

The incident took place a day after the BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty’s victory in the by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly seat was declared on May 4, leading to widespread suspicion and concern in the region.

The death sparked intense political and social unrest across the town, considered the second most important commercial hub in Tripura after Agartala.

Party workers, supporters, and local residents took to the streets demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and exemplary punishments for the culprits. Protesters also blocked key roads in Dharmanagar, escalating tensions in the town.

In a complaint lodged with the police, Roy’s wife alleged that a group of “miscreants”, reportedly owing allegiance to the BJP and closely associated with a section of ruling party leaders, were involved in the incident.

She further alleged that she, along with her elderly father-in-law and mother-in-law, was assaulted by the same group of “miscreants” on May 4.

While the exact cause of death remains unclear, police have continued the investigation into the matter. The victim’s wife claimed that due to the humiliation by the miscreants, her husband committed suicide by hanging using the BJP flag.

The victim’s family claimed to have identified the accused and alleged that the incident was premeditated and possibly driven by political motives. Authorities said that all possible angles are being examined to ascertain the truth behind the incident.
