On ‘National Technology Day’, Gujarat showcases AI push across key sectors

Gandhinagar, May 11 (IANS) Gujarat has identified and initiated more than 40 artificial intelligence (AI) use cases across over 14 government departments covering agriculture, healthcare, urban development, energy and governance, as the state expands the use of AI-driven systems in public administration and citizen services.

Details released by the state government on ‘National Technology Day’ showed that Gujarat has launched the “Gujarat Future Technology Initiatives” (GFTI) programme to ensure the use of AI across departments.

Institutional mechanisms, including an AI Taskforce, AI Implementation Cell and AI Action Plan, have also been established to support the strategic implementation of technology-based governance.

The government said the state has taken steps to strengthen AI research and development through the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO), a Section 8 entity set up for advanced AI research and innovation.

“Through the IAIRO and GPU ecosystem, Gujarat has become the country’s AI ecosystem,” officials said while describing the state’s approach as “technology-based good governance” with “government departments being equipped with AI”.

National Technology Day is observed annually on May 11 to commemorate India’s successful nuclear tests under ‘Operation Shakti’ in 1998 and the maiden flight of the indigenously developed Hans-3 aircraft.

The day was declared ‘National Technology Day’ by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India was building a strong global identity in technology and artificial intelligence. Gujarat, under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia, had taken significant steps towards technology-driven governance and AI-enabled services,” officials said.

According to the government, the AI Centre of Excellence, established in 2025 in collaboration with NASSCOM and Microsoft, has become a key part of the state’s technology development efforts.

The government said that in its first year, the centre recorded more than 1,400 industry engagements, trained over 350 officials in AI and emerging technologies, supported more than 100 startup solutions and connected with over 300 global delegates.

It added that implementation processes for 21 AI use cases across 14 departments had already begun. The state also highlighted the expansion of GPU infrastructure required for AI and machine learning systems.

Under the ‘India AI Mission’, Gujarat has operationalised 16 GPU centres and is working towards installing more than 100 GPUs across the state.

A “GPU-as-a-Service” platform with real-time usage tracking has also been launched to provide scalable computing access to government departments, startups and educational institutions.

“The Gujarat Informatics Limited has developed AI-based solutions aimed at improving administrative efficiency and public services. These include tools for document automation, grievance routing, language processing, archival search and access to government scheme information,” they said.

Among the systems listed were a Document Extractor, Grievance Classifier, AI-based chatbot, GSAAR AI-based archival system, Gujarati language model, LLM and NLP dashboards, scheme eligibility checker for citizens and the Gujarati grammar assistant “Bhasha Setu”.

In agriculture, the government said AI applications are being explored for crop disease diagnosis, smart irrigation and grain quality analysis.

Healthcare use cases include AI-assisted diagnosis, chronic disease detection and lung cancer screening.

In urban development, AI systems are being used for smart mobility, CCTV analytics and blueprint automation, while the energy sector is using AI for electricity theft detection and consumption analysis.

The government said Gujarat’s digital and IT initiatives were helping make government services more transparent, data-driven and citizen-centric.

It added that AI-powered smart dashboards, multilingual tools and real-time processing systems were being used to improve the speed and efficiency of administrative processes.

“Gujarat would continue to expand AI and digital transformation initiatives in the coming years to strengthen its position in technology-driven governance,” officials noted.
