Guwahati, May 11 (IANS) Former Union Minister and BJP MLA-elect Rameswar Teli on Monday expressed gratitude to Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma after his name was announced for induction into the new Assam Cabinet, saying he would continue to work for all sections of society and the development of the state.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the new Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government, Teli said Tuesday would be a “historic day” for Assam as several top national leaders would attend the event.

“I thank the Chief Minister for giving me this responsibility. Tomorrow will be a historic day in Assam’s political journey as PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Chief Ministers, and Union ministers will attend the ceremony,” Teli said.

The senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, who won the Duliajan Assembly seat in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, is set to take oath as a Cabinet minister on Tuesday.

His induction into the Council of Ministers was announced by Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.

Teli said he remained committed to serving the people of Assam and would continue to work for every community in the state.

“First of all, I am an Assamese. Wherever I have worked, I have always tried to serve the people sincerely. I have worked for all communities and tribes, and I will continue to do so in the future as well,” he added.

Teli, who previously served as Union Minister of State in the PM Modi government, is considered an influential Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Upper Assam and enjoys strong support in the tea garden belt and among Other Backward Classes communities.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new Assam government will be held on Tuesday at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara on the outskirts of Guwahati.

PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several National Democratic Alliance Chief Ministers are expected to attend the event.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance secured a landslide victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party alone won 82 seats, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front secured 10 seats each.
