Kolkata, May 12 (IANS) Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra was admitted to a hospital after falling ill, said party leaders on Tuesday.

He was admitted to a hospital in South Kolkata on Monday evening. According to hospital sources, the Trinamool MLA has urinary problems. He has been kept under observation by doctors.

Hospital sources also informed that Madan’s physical condition is stable for now, and he is responding positively to treatment. However, Mitra’s close aides said that he has been under mental pressure after his party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

According to family members, if everything is fine, the Trinamool MLA will be discharged from the hospital in the next few days.

Madan had contested from his Kamarhati constituency in this year’s Assembly elections. While Trinamool suffered an electoral debacle in the state, Madan managed to win his constituency. His followers are worried after the veteran leader suddenly fell ill.

Madan Mitra was also in the news during the election campaign. From singing to campaigning in colourful dresses, the Trinamool leader was seen selling jhalmuri.

In 2011, he contested from Kamarhati and won, when Trinamool Congress came to power, ending the 34-year reign of the Left Front government.

In 2014, he was arrested in the Saradha chit fund case. After spending about 21 months in jail, he got bail in September 2016. He contested from Kamarhati in that year’s election, which he lost. After that, Trinamool fielded him again in the Bhatpara by-election in 2019. Madan was also defeated by Arjun Singh’s son, Pawan Singh, in Bhatpara. After that, he contested from Kamarhati again in the 2021 Assembly elections, which he won. After that, the Trinamool leader won from Kamarhati in 2026 as well.
