Couple arrested for ‘e-rickshaw’ robbery in Delhi

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS) Delhi Police arrested a couple in Moti Nagar area for robbing passengers travelling in e-rickshaws, an official said on Sunday.

According to police officials, a 60-year-old man lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Moti Nagar Police Station on May 14. The complainant mentioned that he was carrying a small bag containing cash amounting to Rs. 1,00,000 while travelling in an e-rickshaw the previous day and upon reaching his destination, he found that his bag had been torn and the cash was missing.

Police initiated an investigation into complaints of theft and launched hunt to trace down the suspects.

The officials analyzed several CCTV footages near the area. During investigation, the e-rickshaw that was used in the crime, bearing registration number DL 4ERA 0760, was identified.

A sustained efforts and technical surveillance eventually led to the apprehension of the accused couple. They were identified as 25-year-old Suresh and his 22-year-old wife Rajni alias Anjali.

During their interrogation, the accused have revealed that they used to target elderly passengers travelling in e-rickshaws and steal cash and valuables from their bags when they deboarded.

Subsequently, stolen cash amounting to Rs. 90,000, along with the e-rickshaw used in commission of offence, was recovered from their possession.

Officials mentioned that further investigation in the matter is in progress to ascertain involvement of the accused persons in other similar cases of theft targeting passengers and senior citizens,

Earlier, Delhi Police on Saturday apprehended two active criminals and one receiver in connection with a theft case, recovering a huge cache of stolen valuables, including jewellery, cash and melted silver.

According to police, the accused were arrested by the crack team of Police Station Bindapur in Dwarka district. The recovered items include a 2.433 kg melted silver brick, cash worth Rs 5,58,054, gold ornaments, silver jewellery, and 198 old Indian and foreign coins.
