Kalaburagi, May 18 (IANS) Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre on Monday said the government would take necessary measures to increase green cover in the Kalyana Karnataka region, which currently suffers from a severe shortage of forest and tree cover, leading to climatic irregularities.

Speaking to media persons after inaugurating a newly constructed zoo near Madabool village in Kalagi taluk of Chittapur constituency, Khandre stressed the need to create greater awareness about environmental conservation.

“The Kalyana Karnataka region has a serious shortage of green cover, resulting in climate imbalances. There is a need to create awareness regarding environmental protection. We will discuss this issue in the upcoming KKRDB meeting and take steps to release the required funds,” he said.

Khandre stated that the newly inaugurated zoo is the second-largest zoo in the Kalyana Karnataka region after the one established in Hampi. He credited Rural Development and IT Minister Priyank Kharge for showing special interest in the project.

The minister said the zoo has been constructed for Rs 44 crore across 42.33 acres and is expected to emerge as a major tourist attraction in the region.

“As many as 56 different species of animals will be brought here. Two tigers have already been shifted from Bannerghatta National Park. Visitors can currently see crocodiles, foxes and several other animals. More species of animals and birds will be added in the coming months,” he stated.

Highlighting the need for afforestation, Khandre said the region currently has only one to two per cent green cover and that the government plans to improve it by undertaking large-scale plantation drives.

“In the 2026-27 KKRDB meeting, discussions will be held regarding the release of necessary funds for increasing green cover in the region,” he added.

Replying to a question on vacancies in the Forest Department, Khandre said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has already granted permission to recruit additional veterinary staff for the department and that steps would also be taken to fill other required posts in the coming days.

The minister warned that strict action would be taken against those illegally cutting trees in the forest or on government land. However, he clarified that exemptions are available for cutting trees located on private land.

On forest land encroachment, Khandre said the government has intensified eviction drives across the state.

“So far, nearly 10,000 acres of encroached forest land have been cleared, including around 200 acres in Bengaluru alone. The Supreme Court has also directed the formation of an SIT in this matter,” he said.

Khandre further stated that after the present government assumed office, nearly 11 lakh saplings have been planted across the state, and about 90 per cent of them have survived.

“Officials have been instructed to ensure adequate water supply and protection for the saplings for at least five years,” he added.

He also said the tigers brought from Bannerghatta National Park would be provided with proper food and care to help them adapt to the local climatic conditions. All remaining identified species of animals and birds are expected to be brought to the zoo within the next three months, he added.
