Father, son remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody in Greater Noida dowry death case

Greater Noida, May 19 (IANS) In a tragic incident that has once again highlighted the persistent issue of dowry harassment, a 24-year-old woman named Deepika died after allegedly jumping from the roof of her in-laws’ house in Jalpura village under the Ecotech-3 police station area of Greater Noida.

Following her death, the woman’s husband, Hrithik, and father-in-law, Manoj, were arrested by the city police on Monday.

Both father and son were produced before the Surajpur Court and have been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.

The marriage between Deepika, daughter of Sanjay from Kudi Khera village under the Badalpur police station area, and Hrithik, son of Manoj from Jalpura village, was held with great pomp and grandeur around 14 months ago.

According to the deceased’s family, nearly one crore rupees were spent on the wedding, which included gifting a Fortuner.

However, what began as a lavish celebration soon turned into a nightmare for Deepika, as her family alleges she was subjected to continuous mental and physical torture by her in-laws over additional dowry demands.

Deepika’s relatives claim that injury marks were found on her body, raising suspicions of foul play rather than a simple suicide.

Upon receiving news of the incident, her family members rushed to the spot and accused the in-laws of murdering her.

The police reached the location, took the body into custody, and sent it for a post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered against the accused based on a written complaint filed by Deepika’s father under relevant sections of the law.

Preliminary investigation by the police suggests that Deepika, distressed due to persistent dowry harassment, took the extreme step of jumping from the roof of the house.

However, the final cause of death will be ascertained only after the post-mortem report and further evidence are examined.

Police officials have assured that a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the complete truth behind the young woman’s sudden demise.

The arrests of Hrithik and Manoj mark a swift response by the authorities.

The family of the deceased has demanded strict action against the accused and justice for their daughter.

Local residents expressed shock over the incident, which has once again brought attention to the deep-rooted social problem of dowry in society.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are examining all aspects, including the allegations of physical torture and repeated financial demands made by the in-laws.
