Chennai, May 20 (IANS) Tamil Nadu’s power sector is grappling with an enormous financial burden, with the Electricity Board reportedly carrying a debt of nearly ₹2.5 lakh crore.

Amid growing concerns over the financial health of the sector, Minister Nirmal Kumar has alleged that irregularities and legal violations during the tenure of the previous government significantly contributed to the present crisis.

Speaking on the issue, the minister claimed that several instances of misconduct and violations had surfaced from the previous administration’s period and that many of those cases have now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further enquiry.

He said the current TVK government was committed to ensuring that such issues do not recur.

Nirmal Kumar stated that the Electricity Board, which serves millions of consumers across the state, has been severely affected by years of administrative failures and financial mismanagement.

According to him, the institution has gradually weakened over the years due to alleged irregularities committed under the earlier government.

“The Electricity Board currently carries debt running into lakhs of crores. We are now in a situation where a complete restructuring of the organisation has become unavoidable,” the minister said.

He emphasised that the government is examining every possible option to revive the utility and transform it into a financially stable and efficient entity that benefits the public.

According to him, there are sufficient opportunities and structural mechanisms available to completely reorganise the Board and restore its financial sustainability.

The minister further said the government’s objective is not merely to address the mounting debt burden, but also to modernise the functioning of the Electricity Board and improve its long-term viability.

He maintained that the administration is taking comprehensive steps to rebuild the institution and strengthen its operational framework.

Stressing the seriousness of the situation, Nirmal Kumar said the present government has initiated full-scale efforts to revive the power utility and prevent a repeat of the alleged mistakes of the past.

He added that the government remains determined to restore the Board’s stability while ensuring uninterrupted and efficient services for consumers across Tamil Nadu.
