J&K Police seize drone-dropped heroin consignment near International Border

Jammu, May 20 (IANS) In a major breakthrough against cross-border narcotics smuggling, Jammu and Kashmir Police have seized a heroin consignment weighing around 1.5 to 2 kg in the Bishnah area near the International Border with Pakistan after developing intelligence inputs over the past week, officials said.

Police said that the heroin consignment was dropped through a drone along the border area and was intercepted before it could reach its intended recipients.

According to police, acting on precise intelligence developed over the last one week, teams from the Jammu Headquarters Zone had been maintaining strict round-the-clock vigil in the suspected sectors.

The operation yielded results when the illicit payload was intercepted and seized during the early hours of Wednesday.

“A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) is reaching the spot to conduct a detailed analysis of the recovered contraband and gather vital scientific evidence,” police said.

Police described the seizure as a major success in the fight against narco-terrorism and cross-border smuggling networks.

“This successful seizure is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Jammu Police to dismantle the narco-terror ecosystem,” officials said.

They added that the operation highlighted the force’s enhanced vigilance and tactical capability in countering emerging technological threats such as drone-based smuggling from across the border.

A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to trace both the forward and backward linkages of the Pakistan-based network involved in the smuggling operation.

The seizure of the heroin consignment dropped through a drone comes during the ongoing 100-day-long Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan launched by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on April 6.

The Lieutenant Governor has announced additional punitive measures against drug smuggling, including cancellation of driving licences, passports and Aadhaar cards, besides attachment of properties created through funds generated from the drug trade.

L-G Manoj Sinha has also been leading anti-drug marches in various districts of the Union Territory and urging people to join the administration in dismantling the threat of narco-terrorism so that future generations are protected from drug addiction.
