God shows path, reaching goal is our responsibility, says Dy CM Shivakumar during temple visits

Chamarajanagar (Karnataka), May 21 (IANS) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who is perceived as a contender for the CM’s post, on Thursday said that while God shows people the path, it is their responsibility to achieve their goals through dedication and hard work.

The statements have assumed significance as the high command is likely to focus on the Karnataka leadership issue soon, following the installation of the Congress-led government in Kerala. Shivakumar has been on a spate of temple visits since last week. Asked earlier in the morning when he would become Chief Minister, Shivakumar replied with a smile: “Time will decide that.”

Addressing devotees at the Ashtabandhana Divya Maha Kumbhabhisheka and Samprokshana Mahotsava held as part of the renovation of the Sri Jaganmohana Ranganathaswamy Temple in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district, he said faith and devotion transcend caste and religion.

“God gives us difficulties, but also grants us the strength to face them. Showing the way is God’s responsibility, while reaching the destination is ours. We must make use of the opportunities given by God and help others whenever we get the chance,” he said.

Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief, stressed that no religion or deity promotes division. “No God belongs to a particular caste or religion. Religions may differ, but the philosophy is the same. Gods may be many, but devotion is one. Duties may vary, but sincerity is one. God is one, though known by many names,” he said.

Highlighting communal harmony in the region, Shivakumar pointed out that a dargah exists between the Cauvery River and the Ranganatha temple. “This reflects the spirit of harmony of this land,” he added.

Describing Chamarajanagar as a spiritually significant district, Shivakumar said it should not be viewed as backward.

“Chamarajanagar is not a backward district; it is a land of temples and spirituality. It is home to sacred places such as Chamarajeshwara, Biligiri Ranganatha, Himavad Gopalaswamy, Male Mahadeshwara and Madhyaranga temples. Lord Ranganathaswamy blesses devotees from the banks of the Cauvery river,” he said.

He added that no matter how influential a person becomes, one should never abandon values, traditions and spiritual practices.

Offering prayers at the temple, Shivakumar conveyed his respects on behalf of his family and devotees. He also praised industrialist Mahesh Reddy and the AMR Group family for undertaking the renovation of the temple.

“Mahesh Reddy and his family have received the blessing of serving Lord Lakshmi Ranganathaswamy by renovating this temple. I pray that God grants them more strength,” he said.

Quoting a Sanskrit verse, Shivakumar said: “By the grace and devotion of priests, even a stone can be seen as Lord Shiva,” and added that temples and faith belonged to everyone equally.
