Assam: NDA legislature party meets ahead of UCC bill

Guwahati, May 21 (IANS) The legislature party of the ruling NDA alliance in Assam held a special meeting on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Assam Legislative Assembly premises in Guwahati.

The meeting assumed significance in the backdrop of the NDA’s emphatic performance in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance retained power with a comfortable majority.

The state government has decided to bring the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the ongoing Assembly session, while the Congress has already expressed its opposition to the proposed legislation.

According to sources, legislators from the BJP and its alliance partners attended the closed-door meeting, where organisational coordination, governance priorities, and future political strategy were discussed.

Senior leaders of the alliance, including ministers and MLAs, were present during the deliberations chaired by the Chief Minister.

Though no official statement was issued immediately after the meeting, party sources said discussions focused on strengthening coordination among alliance partners and accelerating implementation of government programmes across the state.

The NDA alliance, led by the BJP, had registered a decisive victory in the Assembly polls, reaffirming the popularity of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government.

In the recently concluded elections, the BJP crossed the magic figure on its own for the first time in Assam, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), also improved their performance in several constituencies.

The NDA won 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while the BJP itself won 82 seats.

The opposition Congress and other regional parties failed to significantly dent the NDA’s electoral dominance, particularly in Upper Assam, North Assam, and parts of the Barak Valley.

The NDA’s electoral success was driven by welfare schemes, infrastructure development initiatives, and the BJP’s strong organisational network across Assam.

Since returning to power, the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has continued to focus on law and order, investment promotion, flood management, welfare delivery, and major infrastructure projects.

The legislature party meeting is also being viewed as an effort to maintain coordination within the alliance and prepare the political roadmap for the coming months.

The NDA government in Assam has repeatedly asserted that development, governance reforms, and rapid implementation of welfare schemes would remain its top priorities during the new term.

Sources said the alliance legislators also exchanged views on constituency-level issues and reviewed the progress of various government initiatives being implemented across districts.

The meeting was held inside the Assembly complex amid heightened political activity in the state capital.
