Bhopal, May 23 (IANS) Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Singh on Saturday said the police will seek a seven-day remand of Samarth Singh, husband of deceased Twisha Sharma, for further interrogation in the alleged dowry death case.

Addressing a press conference, the Police Commissioner said Samarth was brought to Bhopal late at night after being taken into custody from Jabalpur on Friday evening. “First, we will get his medical done and file a PR from the Court. We will ask for 7 days’ remand. He was brought in late at night. Some procedures still take time. We’ll interrogate him further, and only then can we say anything,” Singh said.

He also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found to have helped Samarth evade the police during the 10 days he remained untraceable after Twisha’s death. “If something comes to light that someone sheltered him, action will be taken against them as well,” the Police Commissioner said.

Sharing details of the developments at the Jabalpur district court on Friday evening, Singh said Samarth had reached the court to surrender, but the court did not permit it. “He had come to the court in Jabalpur to surrender, but the court refused to let him surrender. Meanwhile, my team was also there. Then, my team took him into custody with the help of the Jabalpur police team,” he added.

Samarth Singh had been missing since May 12, after his wife, Twisha Sharma, was found hanging at her marital home in Bag Mugalia Extension in Bhopal.

Meanwhile, amid allegations of delay and inaction by the police, Additional DCP Anil Sharma told IANS that the investigation was carried out strictly in accordance with the law and denied any negligence on the part of the police.

“There has been absolutely no laxity in this matter. Investigative processes invariably involve individuals who are both influential and non-influential. However, the police conduct their operations strictly in accordance with the law and established procedures,” Sharma told IANS.

He further said that the Bhopal Police had coordinated with the Jabalpur district police to trace and arrest Samarth Singh.

While the Bhopal Police maintain that Samarth was arrested from the premises of the Jabalpur district court, his lawyer has claimed that he had voluntarily surrendered before the court.
