Bengal Guv orders departmental probe against Resident Medical Officer linked to RG Kar case

Kolkata, May 23 (IANS) West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi on Saturday ordered a departmental probe against Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Avik Dey, whose name had surfaced both in connection with the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024 and the multi-crore financial irregularities case linked to the institution.

Dey, considered a close confidant of former R.G. Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, was also arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the financial irregularities case related to the medical college.

Recently, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the reopening of files linked to the R.G. Kar cases and suspended three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers — former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and former Deputy Commissioners Abhishek Gupta and Indira Mukherjee — over alleged lapses in the initial investigation conducted by Kolkata Police before the probe was handed over to the CBI following an order of the Calcutta High Court.

CM Adhikari also clarified that the fresh investigation into the R.G. Kar cases would continue parallel to the ongoing CBI probe.

Now, with the R.G. Kar files being reopened by the state administration, the Governor on Saturday ordered a departmental probe against Dr Avik Dey.

Incidentally, as per the Chief Minister’s announcement, departmental proceedings are also being conducted against the three suspended IPS officers.

It is learnt that multiple allegations have surfaced against Dr Dey, including allegations of promoting a so-called “threat culture” in different medical institutions in the state through his close associates and allegedly pursuing postgraduate training under the service quota illegally, among others.

Dey is currently serving as a radiologist at Burdwan Medical College in East Burdwan district.

During the R.G. Kar controversy, his name had surfaced in allegations relating to the alleged operation of “threat culture” in different medical colleges across the state.

He was also accused of reaching the crime scene in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case despite having no official role there. Questions were raised regarding the timing and reasons behind his presence at the spot during the early hours after the victim’s body was discovered.

The controversy deepened further after suspended Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee, during a press conference in 2024, described Dey as a “fingerprint expert” of the detective department.
