Guwahati, May 24 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that a major consignment of banned Codeine Phosphate syrup worth around Rs 2.1 crore was seized by the Cachar Police as part of the state government’s ongoing anti-drug operations.

Sharing the development on Saturday on social media platform X, the Chief Minister added that the seizure was made after police acted on reliable intelligence inputs and intercepted a truck in Cachar district.

“Update on #AssamAgainstDrugs. Based on reliable inputs, a truck was intercepted by @cacharpolice leading to the recovery of Rs 2.1 crore worth of banned Codeine Phosphate Syrup. One individual has been arrested. Our efforts to dismantle the drugs network will continue,” CM Sarma said.

According to police sources, the truck was intercepted during a special operation carried out by the Cachar Police in southern Assam.

During the search operation, a huge quantity of banned cough syrup bottles containing Codeine Phosphate was recovered from the vehicle.

Police said that one person was arrested in connection with the case, while further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the consignment.

Officials suspect that the narcotic substances were being transported through Assam as part of an interstate drug trafficking network.

The seizure is the latest in a series of anti-narcotics operations launched across Assam over the past few years under the state government’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking and illegal narcotics trade.

The Assam government has repeatedly said that the fight against drugs remains one of its top priorities, with law enforcement agencies conducting regular operations in border districts and key transit routes.

Chief Minister Sarma has often asserted that the state administration would continue strict action against drug peddlers and organised trafficking networks to make Assam drug-free.
