Patna, May 24 (IANS) Tension gripped Nauranga-Jalalpur village under the Panchmahla Police Station area in Bihar’s Patna district after a dispute linked to a social media post allegedly escalated into firing during a village council meeting.

According to an official on Saturday, the conflict originated from a social media post made by Mukesh Kumar, who is said to be the current Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) President and a representative of the village sarpanch in Nauranga-Jalalpur village.

The post, related to an earlier incident, allegedly enraged members of another group in the village.

To resolve the dispute and restore peace, a Panchayat meeting was convened on Saturday.

However, during the discussions, an argument between the two sides intensified, following which allegations emerged that several rounds of firing were carried out at the spot.

The gunfire triggered panic and chaos among villagers attending the meeting, leading to a stampede-like situation.

No injuries have been officially confirmed so far.

Police authorities have not yet formally verified the exact number of rounds fired or identified the individuals responsible for the firing.

However, security has been tightened in the area amid rising tension.

Following information about the incident, police teams from Panchmahla police station, along with personnel from nearby stations, reached the village and launched an investigation.

According to sources, raids are currently being conducted at the residences and suspected hideouts of two local youths, who are being questioned in connection with the case.

Police officials said efforts are underway to identify all those involved and restore normalcy in the village.

Nauranga-Jalalpur village is considered sensitive in Patna following a firing incident that took place on January 23, 2025, when Janata Dal-United MLA Anant Singh and the Sonu-Monu gang were involved in an exchange for firing of more than 200 rounds of gunshots.

Nauranga-Jalalpur is a native village of Sonu-Monu, and Anant Singh went there to release a house allegedly captured by the Sonu-Monu gang.

On January 24, 2025, Anant Singh surrendered before the Barh Sub-Divisional Court. He has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days and is currently lodged in the Beur jail.

Sonu Singh and Monu Singh were also arrested in connection with that case.
