Fresh police complaint filed against Abhishek Banerjee over alleged objectionable social media post before Bengal polls

Kolkata, May 27 (IANS) A fresh police complaint had been filed against the Trinamool Congress’ General Secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, at the Bhabanipur Police Station in Kolkata on Wednesday, accusing him of making objectionable social media statements on May 2, two days before the results of the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, were announced.

The police complaint had been filed by an individual Arnab Kanti Ghosh in the afternoon, which had been officially received by the Bhabanipur Police Station.

However, at the time the report was filed it was not clear whether any first information report (FIR) had been registered or not on the basis of the complaint.

In the complaint, Ghosh had accused Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of the former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of making certain comments in his social media posts that could hamper the national unity and communal harmony in the country.

In his complaint, Ghosh had raised the question on how after taking an oath as a Lok Sabha member and promising to protect the sovereignty of the Constitution and the territorial integrity of the country, the Trinamool Congress General Secretary could refer to the entire Gujarati community as a ‘gang’ or criminal group.

According to the complainant, such comments were not just an insult for a particular community but also an attack on India’s pluralistic culture and social harmony.

Ghosh also claimed that the Gujarati community had long been making significant contributions to business, economy, industrial development and social service work in various parts of the country, including West Bengal.

Such comments from a Lok Sabha member were extremely irresponsible and meant to slander a particular community in a blanket manner, the complainant said.

The complaint also raised concerns that if the results of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections were different and had the Trinamool Congress returned to power, such comments could have created an atmosphere of political or communal violence against the Gujarati community living in the state.

However, there was no reaction from the Trinamool Congress in the matter.
