Those with moral strength will resist: Trinamool’s Saugata Roy on spate of resignations in party

Kolkata, May 27 (IANS) Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Wednesday said that those who possess “moral strength” will not resign from the party, especially at a time when it has lost the West Bengal Assembly election, while terming veteran parliamentarian Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s resignations from all party posts as “a style”.

Four-time MP Dr Ghosh Dastidar on Wednesday tendered her resignation from all the organisational posts in the party with immediate effect. Earlier, she had also resigned from the post of Trinamool’s organisational district President for Barasat.

Interacting with reporters, Roy said: “She (Dastidar) has been giving her resignation. This is a style. If she gives her resignation every day, it will be news in the media. It doesn’t have any importance.”

Significantly, Dastidar has not yet resigned from her position as MP. On this, he said: “She is going step by step. However, it doesn’t matter. The party (Trinamool) has lost the polls; during this time, those who possess moral strength will resist.”

About the resignations of Trinamool councillors, Roy said: “Actually, some people don’t have the morality. There is nothing to worry about.”

On Trinamool MP and MLAs joining a BJP-led administrative meet in Kalyani, he said: “Our party has no such obstructions. The Chief Minister had invited them. There is no political significance to it.”

Roy also pointed out that many people have objections and grievances against the political consultancy I-PAC, including him.

“But this matter is not related to the party. They should have told us earlier. According to me, Kakoli was close to (party supremo) Mamata Banerjee. No such top leader has resigned, and very few councillors have quit the party. I hope that no such incident will take place in the coming days,” he said.

Responding to the question on illegal infiltrators who gathered at Bengal’s Hakimpur border, he highlighted that it is the BSF’s duty to stop these. “The Trinamool Congress government had nothing to do with it. If infiltrators are detected in Hakimpur, they will be deported,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Rahul Sinha maintained that the resignations are an internal matter of the Trinamool.

However, he claimed that except for party chief Mamata Banerjee, no other leader will remain in the Trinamool.

“Abhishek Banerjee will either migrate abroad or go to jail. The entire party will be reduced to ruins,” Sinha told IANS.

Referring to Trinamool’s defeat in the Falta Assembly constituency repoll, he said: “Despite having ruled for 15 years, Trinamool Congress came fourth in the Falta repoll.
