Kolkata, May 28 (IANS) Trinamool Congress councillor Arup Chakraborty on Thursday resigned from the post of party spokesperson.

In an email to the party leadership, he said that he was resigning for personal reasons. However, he also expressed gratitude for the trust reposed in him by the party and for being given the responsibility.

Earlier on Wednesday, Arup Chakraborty had resigned from the post of member of the Accounts Committee at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

On Thursday, Arup Chakraborty sent an email at around 1 p.m. addressed to Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

In the email, he wrote: “I am honoured to have been able to serve the party in this way. As long as I have worked, I have tried to highlight the ideology, values and philosophy of the party while representing it before the people and the media.”

He further wrote: “I am grateful for the trust the party leadership has placed in me and for giving me this responsibility.”

Arup Chakraborty, the councillor of Ward No. 98 at the KMC, said he had taken the decision for personal reasons.

On Wednesday, he submitted his resignation letter from the post of Accounts Committee member to KMC Commissioner Smita Pandey.

Another Trinamool councillor, Sushanta Ghosh, accompanied him while resigning from the post of chairman of Borough No. 12.

Later, both leaders also submitted their resignation letters to Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim.

Both of them clarified that they were not resigning from their councillor posts despite stepping down from their respective positions at the KMC.

Later, Arup Chakraborty said at a press conference: “This result in the Assembly election was not desirable. However, the verdict of the people has to be taken seriously. If we cannot accept defeat, the previous victory becomes false. The party workers are now in danger. Where are those leaders now who were ministers for so long?”

Earlier in the day, doctor and Trinamool Congress leader Santanu Sen also resigned from the post of party spokesperson through a letter addressed to former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.

The former Rajya Sabha MP said he had decided to step down from the post after accepting the verdict of the people in the state Assembly elections.
