Ranchi, May 29 (IANS) Ranchi police have busted a cybercrime racket in the Gonda police station area and arrested five people in this connection, officials said on Friday.

A large number of bank passbooks, debit cards, cheque books, mobile phones, and Aadhaar cards were recovered from the accused’s possession, officials added.

A case (No. 68/26) has been registered at the Gonda police station, and further investigation is underway.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan said that on the night of May 28, around 8 p.m., police received a tip-off that a group of youths involved in cyber fraud was operating from a flat in Rock View Apartment near Chandni Chowk in Dhawan Nagar under the Gonda police station limits.

Acting on the information, a team led by the Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police, along with the Gonda SHO and armed personnel, conducted a raid at the flat, where five persons were found under suspicious circumstances.

During the search, police recovered 50 bank passbooks issued in different names, 26 debit cards, eight cheque books, 13 mobile phones and three Aadhaar cards. All the items have been seized.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that fake identity documents were used to open bank accounts, which were then used to carry out cyber fraud.

They further said that the flat belonged to a person known as “Nikhil Bhaiya”, who had called them there and trained them in committing cybercrime.

Those arrested include Kajal Kumar Mandal from Jamtara, Anand Kumar and Shakib Ansari from Ramgarh, Bikki Kumar from Bokaro, and a minor from Ramgarh.

The raiding team included Gonda SHO Abhay Kumar Sinha, sub-inspectors Sunny Kumar and Om Prakash Prasad, assistant sub-inspector Ramjanam Prasad, along with personnel of the armed forces.

Police are now working to trace the larger network and other absconding accused.
