Guwahati, June 1 (IANS) The prime accused, Roz Ali, in the sensational attack case in Assam’s Nalbari district in Gangapur locality, succumbed to his injuries during a police encounter conducted in Mukalmua area while attempting to flee to evade arrest on Monday, officials said.

The case stems from an incident on Saturday night near Gangapur under Mukalmua police station limits, which claimed the life of 19-year-old girl Madhurjya Barman and left another 18-year-old girl, identified as Mridumudra Deka, critically injured.

Police said the victims were travelling on a scooter when they were allegedly attacked by Roz Ali and another accused, Ashik Ali.

Following the incident, an intensive search operation was launched across the district to trace the accused persons.

According to police sources, Roz Ali was injured during an encounter that took place as security personnel attempted to apprehend him in Mukalmua. Later, he died due to his injuries, and doctors declared him dead when brought to a nearby hospital.

Madhurjya Barman, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata, died on the spot due to severe injuries.

She was also serving as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union.

Mridumudra Deka, who sustained grievous injuries in the attack, was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where she remains admitted in the intensive care unit.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage in Assam, with several local organisations and residents alleging that the attack stemmed from the rejection of a proposal by one of the accused. Some groups have termed the incident a case of ‘love jihad’, though police officials have not officially confirmed any such angle and said the investigation is still in progress.

Reacting to the incident, Nalbari MLA and former minister Jayanta Malla Baruah expressed concern and urged strict action against those involved.

He said the Gangapur incident had shocked people across the state and added that Assam Police were acting swiftly in the matter.

The legislator also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased teen and wished speedy recovery for the injured girl.

Police officials said investigations are continuing to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the motive behind the attack.
