Relief from heat to continue in Delhi-NCR; IMD forecasts rain and gusty winds until June 4

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are expected to get continued respite from the intense summer heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the region over the next few days. According to the weather department, these conditions are likely to persist until June 4, helping keep temperatures under control.

For Tuesday, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the national capital, warning of possible thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light rainfall, and strong winds, particularly during the night. Wind speeds may reach 40-50 kmph in some areas. The department, however, has not issued any colour-coded warnings for Wednesday and Thursday.

Meteorologists expect the prevailing weather pattern to prevent daytime temperatures from crossing the 40-degree Celsius mark at least until June 6. The cooler conditions follow an unusually mild start to June in Delhi.

On June 1, the city recorded one of its coolest beginnings to the month in recent years. The Safdarjung observatory, which serves as Delhi’s primary weather station, reported a maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.9 degrees Celsius. The last time Delhi experienced a lower daytime temperature on June 1 was in 2023, when the mercury settled at 32.7 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the IMD has indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala within the next two to three days. Weather conditions have become favourable for the monsoon’s further advancement over parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

The department also expects the monsoon to progress into additional areas of the Bay of Bengal, including the southwest, west-central, east-central, and northeastern regions, over the same period. The annual monsoon season generally begins around June 1 and gradually spreads across the country.

Apart from Delhi-NCR, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, rainfall, and gusty winds in several northern, eastern, central, and southern states this week.

The anticipated showers are expected to bring relief from high temperatures and improve weather conditions across multiple regions of the country.
