Kolkata, June 3 (IANS) The Kolkata Police have arrested a young man for duping a woman after he befriended her on a matrimonial site and promised to get married, said a police official on Wednesday.

Following the initial investigation, it was learned that the young man had similarly duped several women of money and jewellery, and allegedly married 15 women through this kind of fraud.

According to the police, the young man has been identified as Matiur Rahman, a resident of Bowbazar in central Kolkata. He has registered himself as Manik Roy on matrimony sites. It is known that he met a young woman from Naihati in the North 24 Parganas district under this name.

The conversation went according to plan. Manik claimed that he works in a job that pays Rs 1.5 crore annually. The young woman also dreamt of marriage and had told her family as well. The young woman claimed that after a while, the mental pressure started to increase. The young man kept asking for money and gold.

The complainant claimed that she gave him Rs 85,000 in cash, a gold bracelet and several other things. At first, the young woman did not suspect anything.

However, the young woman somehow found out that his home was in the East Burdwan district. This deepened her suspicions. Then she searched her boyfriend’s social media and got information about several women. She contacted them.

After talking to them, she found out that Matiur had been talking to everyone in the same way and had extorted money. He had even married 15 women. After that, the young woman approached the police and lodged a formal complaint. Based on the complaint, the police arrested the accused man on Tuesday night.
