Srinagar, June 5 (IANS) J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on World Environment Day on Friday called for collective efforts to protect the environment.

J&K L-G Manoj Sinha said that safeguarding the environment is vital for a healthier planet for future generations.

In his message on X, he stated: “On World Environment Day, let’s rededicate ourselves to the conservation of Mother Earth and preservation of nature’s delicate balance. Our collective efforts towards environmental protection are vital for the well-being of humanity and a healthier planet for future generations.”

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his message, said his government is committed to environmental conservation and called upon every citizen to join the collective mission.

On World Environment Day, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development, the Chief Minister’s office said in a post on X.

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action to protect the environment.

It is supported by many non-governmental organisations, businesses, and government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.

First held in 1973, it has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development, and wildlife crime.

World Environment Day is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States.

Every year, the programme provides a theme and forum for businesses, non-government organisations, communities, politicians, and stars to advocate environmental causes.
