More trouble for Trinamool as chiefs of party-run Zilla Parishad, Municipality resign

Kolkata, June 5 (IANS) The President of a Trinamool Congress-run Zilla Parishad and one Chairman of a municipality run by the previous ruling party in West Bengal resigned from their respective chairs on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, first Uttam Barik, the President of the Trinamool Congress run Zilla Parishad in East Midnapore district, which is the native district of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, tendered his resignation from that chair and submitted his resignation letter to the divisional commissioner of the district.

Later in the day, Kamalakanta Chakraborty, the Chairman of the Trinamool Congress-run Katwa Municipality, in East Burdwan District, also submitted his resignation from his chair.

Confirming the tendering of his resignation, Barik said that while he had already tendered his resignation, the process of accepting it will be completed within another seven to eight days after he attends a hearing in the matter.

“Now it is up to the sate government whether it would appoint any other elected Zilla Parishad member in my chair or put the Zilla Parishad under an administrator,” Barik said without specifying the reason behind his decision to resign.

However, Chakraborty cited health reasons for his decision to resign from the post of the Chairman of the Katwa Municipality.

“My physical condition is not good at all. Due to illness, I can no longer fulfill my duties as Chairman of the municipality. Therefore, I have decided to resign,” said Chakraborty.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor and former minister in the previous West Bengal Cabinet led by Mamata Banerjee, Firhad Hakim who announced his decision to resign as the KMC Mayor earlier this week and also sought permission from Mamata Banerjee for the same, officially tendered his resignation from that chair on Friday.

Explaining his decision on this count, he said, “The chair of the Mayor of KMC has a different sort of dignity considering the great personalities who occupied the chair before me. I had worked with full authority as a Mayor for a long time, since I was the Mayor and also handled the state municipal affairs and urban development department then. I single-handedly managed the dual duties. But in the changed situation that is not possible anymore. So, I do not want to insult the chair anymore,” Hakim said on Friday.
