Rohini Acharya criticises Bihar govt over revised security cover for Lalu Prasad, family members

Patna, June 5 (IANS) The Bihar government’s decision to revise the security arrangements for several members of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family following a fresh review of threat assessments and existing security protocols has triggered a political debate in the state, with the opposition alleging that the move is politically motivated.

Reacting to the development, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya criticised the government in a post on social media platform X.

She alleged that the reduction in security for Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi reflected political vendetta and questioned the rationale behind altering the protection provided to former Chief Ministers.

According to her, reducing the security of political opponents raises concerns about democratic norms and constitutional responsibilities.

Rohini Acharya also argued that, given the long public and political careers of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, their security should not become a subject of political considerations.

According to the revised arrangements, the Z+ security cover previously provided to Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi has been downgraded.

At the same time, the Y+ security cover of Tejashwi Yadav will continue without any change.

Authorities have also reportedly finalised the security arrangements for Tej Pratap Yadav, Misa Bharti and Rajshri Yadav in accordance with the updated security review.

Government sources indicated that the changes were made following a routine assessment process, under which the level of security provided to public figures is determined by their current constitutional position and inputs received from intelligence agencies regarding potential threats.

Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, both former Chief Ministers of Bihar, had previously been accorded Z+ security, which generally includes a larger contingent of security personnel, residential guards and escort vehicles.

The revision of the security cover has added another point of contention between the ruling alliance and the opposition in Bihar.

While government officials maintain that the exercise is part of a standard review mechanism based on threat-perception assessments, opposition leaders have portrayed it as an act of political retaliation.
