Daman, June 5 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the new terminal building of NAMO Airport in Daman, a project aimed at strengthening air connectivity for the Union Territory and supporting its growing tourism and economic sectors.

The inauguration formed part of the Prime Minister’s visit to Daman, during which he will launch and lay the foundation stone for a series of development projects worth around Rs 2,970 crore across sectors, including healthcare, tourism, infrastructure, and connectivity.

The new airport terminal is expected to significantly improve access to Daman, which has traditionally relied on road links to major cities in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

According to official information released ahead of the visit, the project is designed to enhance regional connectivity and improve ease of travel for residents, tourists, and businesses.

The terminal building has been developed with modern passenger facilities and is intended to support the Union Territory’s entry into India’s expanding civil aviation network.

Officials said the facility includes a terminal area with seating capacity for approximately 180 passengers at a time.

The airport project has been viewed as a major infrastructure milestone for Daman, which is seeking to expand its tourism sector and improve accessibility for investors and visitors.

Prior to the inauguration, officials said the airport would help connect Daman more effectively with major cities such as Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.

The Prime Minister had earlier stated that the new terminal building would improve connectivity and contribute to the region’s development by making travel more convenient for residents and visitors alike.

The airport inauguration comes amid a broader push by the central government to improve transport infrastructure in smaller cities and Union Territories through investments in roads, railways, ports, and aviation facilities.

Following the inauguration, PM Modi will participate in a public programme in Daman, where he will inaugurate, dedicate, and lay the foundation stone for additional projects spanning healthcare, public welfare, tourism, and infrastructure development.

Officials said the new terminal is expected to improve passenger movement, strengthen regional integration, and provide a fresh boost to economic activity in the coastal Union Territory.
