Abhishek Banerjee leaves for Delhi before scheduled departure, reason ‘unclear’

Kolkata, June 6 (IANS) Trinamool Congress General Secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, left for New Delhi on Saturday.

Initially, it was scheduled that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, would leave for New Delhi on Sunday afternoon to attend the crucial meeting of the Indian National Inclusive Development Alliance (INDIA) bloc in the national capital on Monday.

However, a party insider said that Abhishek Banerjee left for New Delhi on Saturday following the instructions of Mamata Banerjee.

At the same time, the party insider said he was unaware of the reason behind Abhishek Banerjee’s early departure and also whether he would have any meetings in the national capital on Sunday before attending the INDIA bloc meeting on Monday.

Incidentally, Abhishek Banerjee is scheduled to appear at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police at Bhabani Bhavan in south Kolkata on Monday for questioning in connection with the ongoing CID probe into alleged mismatches in the signatures of some Trinamool Congress legislators on a crucial resolution concerning important positions in the West Bengal Assembly that are reserved for the Opposition bench.

However, the chances of his appearance at the CID office on Monday appear bleak, considering that he has already left for New Delhi and is also scheduled to attend the crucial INDIA bloc meeting there on Monday.

He was first summoned on June 1 for questioning at the CID headquarters. However, he did not turn up that day, citing his physical condition following an alleged assault on him at Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on the afternoon of May 30.

However, CID sleuths again appeared at his residence on Kalighat Road in south Kolkata on June 1 and served him a fresh notice directing him to appear at the CID headquarters on June 8.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also served him a notice for questioning and asked him to be present at the agency’s Salt Lake office on the northern outskirts of Kolkata on June 15.
