Trinamool MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigns from Rajya Sabha, party

Kolkata, June 8 (IANS) Veteran Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray on Monday announced his resignation from both the Parliament and the party.

In a press statement, Roy also launched a scathing attack against the Trinamool and its previous government in West Bengal.

Roy claimed that the mass rejection of the Trinamool in the recent West Bengal assembly polls was due to rampant corruption, indiscriminate crime against women, and overall deterioration in all spheres like education, health, industrial development, employment generation and law & order situation in the state during the 15 years of its regime.

According to him, all these factors resulted in mass rejection of the Trinamool, thus helping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) form its first-ever government in West Bengal.

“Already, the newly elected state government of West Bengal has started working to fulfil the promises made in its election manifesto and has started multiple programmes for the overall development and progress of West Bengal. I accept this overwhelming verdict from the people of West Bengal in the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections and resign from both the Rajya Sabha as well as from primary membership of the Trinamool Congress,” Roy said in his statement.

Roy’s resignation comes when party supremo and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee are in New Delhi to attend the crucial meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc.

How quitting also comes amid multiple crises that the Trinamool is going through, first with the formation of a new and majority bloc of rebel party legislators in the West Bengal Assembly and secondly with the brewing possibilities of formation of a similar bloc in the Trinamool Parliamentary Party under the leadership of Lok Sabha member, Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who recently quit from all party posts.

Roy had been vocal against the party leadership ever since it faced a landslide defeat in the West Bengal elections. Earlier, after the R.G. Kar rape and murder case in Kolkata in August 2024, he had also been vocal against the party leadership.

However, at that point, he did not quit the party or resign as a Rajya Sabha member.
