Guwahati, June 9 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday asserted that the governmnet employees and pensioners are important part of the growth trajectory of the state and the cabinet’s decison in two per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for state government employees and pensioners, raising the rate from 58 per cent to 60 per cent will be effective from July.

The decision is expected to benefit more than eight lakh serving employees and pensioners across the state.

Sharing the development on the social media platform X, CM Sarma said the government remains committed to the welfare and well-being of its workforce and retired employees.

“Our employees and pensioners are valued partners in Assam’s growth story. To further support them, the Assam Cabinet has approved a 2 per cent increase in DA and DR, taking it from 58 per cent to 60 per cent from this July,” the Chief Minister said.

According to the Chief Minister, the enhanced amount will be credited from July, providing additional financial support to employees and pensioners amid rising living costs.

Officials said the increase in DA and DR is aimed at helping government personnel and retired employees offset the impact of inflation and maintain their purchasing power.

The revision is expected to result in a significant financial outlay for the state government but will provide relief to lakhs of beneficiaries.

Dearness Allowance is paid to serving government employees, while Dearness Relief is extended to pensioners as compensation against rising prices and inflation. The rates are revised periodically by governments based on prevailing economic conditions.

The latest hike follows a series of measures undertaken by the Assam government in recent years to enhance employee welfare and ensure timely disbursement of salaries, pensions and retirement benefits.

The Chief Minister reiterated that government employees and pensioners play an important role in the state’s development and administration.

He said the government would continue to take steps aimed at improving their welfare and financial security.

With the latest revision, Assam’s DA and DR rates will stand at 60 per cent from July, benefiting more than eight lakh employees and pensioners across the state.
