Brazil’s Ibanez ready to step in at right-back for World Cup

New Jersey, June 10 (IANS) Brazil center-back Roger Ibanez he will be ready to play at right-back during the FIFA World Cup if called upon by manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Doubt surrounds who will fill the role after Roma’s Wesley Franca was ruled out of the tournament on Sunday due to an adductor injury.

Veteran defender Danilo is favoured to start at right back in Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco on Saturday, though Ibanez is also an option after being deployed in the role by Ancelotti against Croatia in March.

“We’re working very hard and giving our best on the training pitch to be as ready as possible for the opening match,” Ibanez told reporters when asked who would replace Wesley.

“That’s the most I can say. If I say more than that, I’ll get in trouble afterward. Whether it’s at center back or right back, I believe I’m ready. The question about my position doesn’t depend on me. Wherever I’m needed, I’ll be prepared to represent my country.”

The 27-year-old Al Ahli defender praised Danilo and said the pair enjoyed a good relationship despite competing for places in the team.

“Day to day with Danilo is always very good,” Ibanez said. “He helps clear up doubts we have within the group, whether it’s about playing at right back or center back, because he plays both positions, and that helps a lot. But there hasn’t been any special conversation.”

Several recent World Cup-winning teams have used central defenders in wider roles, a trend Ibanez said Ancelotti was aware of. The former Roma player said he is ready to adapt his game depending on the team’s needs.

“I feel ready if I need to get forward and support the attack,” he said. “My characteristics are more defensive, yes, but if needed, why not? It’s not that different from normal. You need to defend well and be comfortable on the ball. I know the position and have the confidence to play there.”
