Udhayanidhi Stalin demands Srivaikundam MLA’s removal over assault case

Chennai, June 11 (IANS) DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday intensified his attack on the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government over an alleged sexual assault case in Thoothukudi district’s Srivaikuntam, questioning Chief Minister Vijay’s commitment to ensuring the safety of women in Tamil Nadu.

In a post on social media platform X, Udhayanidhi referred to allegations made by a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted after being lured with the promise of a job.

According to him, the woman alleged that two individuals, said to be close to Srivaikuntam TVK MLA Saravanan, took her in a car on the pretext of securing employment and sexually assaulted her.

The DMK leader further claimed that the victim had alleged that MLA Saravanan later attempted to broker a compromise in the matter. He said the woman had stated that the MLA spoke to Minister N. Anand and assured her that she would be provided a job.

Udhayanidhi also cited allegations that another woman had similarly been victimised and that a minister in the government was aware of the developments. He said the complainant had further alleged that the accused claimed the matter was known to senior leaders in the ruling party, raising questions about who those leaders were.

Accusing the government of attempting to suppress the issue rather than ensuring justice, Udhayanidhi alleged that no action had been taken against those accused in the case. Instead, he claimed, the victim herself had been expelled from the party.

Referring to Vijay’s recent remarks that he was deeply disturbed whenever incidents of sexual assault came to light, Udhayanidhi questioned whether the government was matching its words with action. He asked why action was allegedly being taken against the complainant while those accused of involvement remained untouched.

Demanding immediate intervention, the DMK leader called for a fair and transparent investigation into the allegations and complete justice for the victim. He sought the immediate removal of Srivaikuntam MLA Saravanan from office and urged the government to initiate strict action against all those responsible for the alleged assault.

The TVK government had not issued an official response to Udhayanidhi’s allegations at the time of filing this report.
