Mumbai, June 13 (IANS) Two persons have been arrested, and a search is underway for a third accused after a 26-year-old man was allegedly assaulted and stabbed following a dispute over a seat in a Mumbai local train, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Saturday.

According to Mumbai GRP, the incident took place on Thursday morning aboard a local train travelling from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Khopoli.

The victim has been identified as Satish Pathak (26), a resident of Mumbai’s Masjid Bunder area. He sustained serious injuries in the knife attack and is currently undergoing treatment.

A Mumbai GRP official said the altercation began after an argument broke out between Pathak and a group of youths over seating in the luggage compartment of the train.

“The train had crossed Wangani railway station when a dispute started between the victim and some youths over sitting on a seat in the luggage compartment. The argument soon escalated into a physical fight,” the official said.

According to investigators, the accused allegedly assaulted Pathak and beat him severely. During the scuffle, one of the attackers allegedly stabbed him in the stomach, leaving him critically injured.

Following the incident, Karjat GRP launched an investigation and tracked down the suspects.

Acting on a tip-off, Karjat GRP arrested Imran Idris Ansari (18) and Karan Kanhaiyalal Agrawal (22) within 12 hours of the incident, according to the Mumbai GRP official.

Police said efforts are continuing to trace and arrest a third accused who is believed to have been involved in the attack.

The swift arrests were made after investigators gathered information from witnesses and conducted searches in the area. Officials said the accused are being questioned, and further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and the role of each individual involved.

The GRP has registered a case in connection with the incident and said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
