Kolkata, June 13 (IANS) The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday filed a police complaint against four‑time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member from Sreerampore constituency in Hooghly district and senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, accusing him of making derogatory comments about Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In the complaint filed at Sreerampore police station by BJP leader Bhaskar Ghosh, Banerjee was accused of using highly derogatory and objectionable adjectives about the Union Home Minister, including “goon”, “executioner”, “coward” and “completely dirty man”, during the interim period between April 29 and the day of the results on May 4 this year.

In the complaint, the complainant also accused the Trinamool Congress MP of making unsubstantiated allegations against the Union Home Minister, accusing him of being involved in unethical activities.

Local BJP leaders have also demanded the immediate arrest of Banerjee in the matter.

Ghosh told media persons that all the things Kalyan Banerjee had said about the Union Home Minister were punishable offences and that he must be arrested immediately. He also alleged that Banerjee had made harsh and ugly comments about West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.

Banerjee was also accused of making provocative remarks in addition to vile attacks against the Union Home Minister. The complainant claimed that the Sreerampore MP had repeated attempts to incite unrest during and after the 2021 Assembly elections, following which there were major instances of post‑poll violence in West Bengal.

He added that the Sreerampore police station had accepted his complaint and assured him of proper investigation and necessary action in the matter.

Already, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating an FIR registered against the Trinamool Congress general secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee, in which the latter had been accused of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the recent Assembly polls.

Abhishek is supposed to arrive at the CID headquarters on Tuesday and face interrogation in the matter.
