Kolkata, June 14 (IANS) Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday reached the state’s Criminal Investigation Department headquarters at Bhabani Bhawan to face CID questioning again in the MLA signature mismatch case.

The CID had asked Banerjee to appear by noon. However, the Trinamool MP reached the CID office before the scheduled time.

The Calcutta High Court had ordered Banerjee to cooperate with the investigation of the state police intelligence department in this case. The court had also said that the CID will not take any coercive action against him for the next two weeks.

On Sunday, Banerjee’s car reached the CID office at 11:43 a.m. He first went to the reception. After showing his identity card and signing the attendance book there, he entered the office.

Security has been increased in the Bhabani Bhawan premises with the deployment of additional police and Central forces. Even though Sunday is a holiday, CID officials reached the office in the morning.

Earlier, Banerjee had appeared at the CID office for questioning in the signature forgery case last Thursday (June 11). He was questioned for five and a half hours that day. The Diamond Harbour MP went to Mamata Banerjee’s house in Kalighat after leaving at night.

The CID had asked him to appear again on Sunday.

Banerjee will be undergoing a series of interrogations on Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday (June 15), he is to be questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its Salt Lake office, located in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, in connection with the multi-crore cash-for-school-job case in West Bengal. The ED has already served him a notice in the matter on June 3.

On Tuesday, he is again supposed to appear at the CID headquarters to face interrogation in connection with a case where he has been accused of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the recently concluded Assembly polls in the state. The CID officials served him a notice in the matter on the evening of June 12.

It is not clear whether he will appear before the relevant offices on Monday and Tuesday. Banerjee does not have protection from the High Court against police action in these two cases for now.
